scenalizer - can you index without the huge file?

  1. Subject: Indexing tapes.

    Hi all.

As a background, Normally I use an application that came with a Matrox
RT2500 that basically runs a tape through in real time and dumps the scenes
down to the HD (digi through 1394). The interface displays the first and
last frame of each scanned scene. I then have a choice of either keeping all
the footage captured or just the scene list with these jpgs of the first and
last image from each scene. If I choose the later, the total file size for
an entire tape is something sub 500k.

All well and good. But it takes an hour to index an hour and I have heaps of
    tapes and little patience.

So I tried scenalizer. Fantastic! 5mins a tape and it does a good enough job
for what I need it for.

Which brings me to my question. What I end up with is huge avi, that plays
in fast forward which is nice but it's really too big. I've only tried a
35min tape it ended up around 620mb. (I believe it captures this FF taped
    section in DV format)

Is there solution with scenalizer to achive a clip list with small jpgs but
without the massive avi at the end? I had a good look through the program
and web but am none the wiser.

    Any help very much appreciated.

Not sure what you are doing here... With scenalyser just indext the tape,
which you appear to have done then select clips to capture by putting a tick
in the box, rewind the tape and then clcik on capture, each clip should be
captured as a seperate avi file. I can only think you are capturing the
whole tape at once, and therefore ending up with the huge file.

Good luck. I find scenalyser is really useful for capture but don't use it
    for anything else.

Peter...sorry I guess I didn't make my end objective clear.

I want to be able to have all the start and end points or a very SMALL file
of the contents of an entire tape.

I.e To in six months time just open the file and go yep I know what is on
this tape and THEN click the scenes I want to import without having the
overhead in the meantime of the footage taking up my hard drive space.

This way I get a sort of tape database with the beginning and ending image
from each scene of an entire tape at my fingertips.

This is what I can do currently but like I say...its a 1:1 ratio timewise.

the previous version of scenalyser did this but not the current one. The
nly suggestion i can make to ask on the feedback page of the website..
Despite the size of the file I still find it the most reliable and easy to
    use capturing programs around.

    Good luck
