SD card from Nikon D3100 - SD card can not be read using card reader

    Why it is not possible to use card reader to open photos taken by Nikon D3100?
    I have Canon camera as well and instead of using cables between camera and computer, I'm inserting the card to a card reader and copy the picture files into the computer.

    Please advice.
