I'm looking at subscribing to Shots Magazine for '06
    http://www.shotsmag.com/
I'd like to know from any readers of this mag how good the standard of
    photography is with it?
It's a quarterly mag and considering I'm outside the US, it's gonna cost me
40 bucks for the year, so I want to know if it has any inspirational value,
    dig what I mean ?

    Thanks for any insights.

I like it, and find some of it inspirational. They emphasize the
weird, which I'd like to encorporate into my own work--as an
illustrator (nothing I did professionally) my stuff was always weird.
There are a lot of past issue images posted on their website,
    www.shotsmag.com.

Did you ever submit anything ?

I submitted for the first time this past issue--they didn't print a
damn thing. I believe I need to do it like I did in college--figure
out what the professor wants or likes and then give it to him/her. So
I'm dusting off my old Mamiya RB67 and 150mm soft focus lens and going
    for "weird".

I thought I responded to this this morning, but I don't see that reply,
so here goes one more: yes, I submitted to the most recent issue, but
they did not print any of my photos (the bastards). I believe I need
to cater my shots to their publication if I wish to get published
    therein. I think I'll give it a try... :)

Both posts are visible to me.

I hate it when I killfile myself!!! ;-) No, it's just Google Groups,
which I've been using for this group, lately. Wasn't refreshing
properly--both posts are here now! Incidently, I once got into a
pissing match (you might notice I get into those now and again) with a
guy who kept changing his email addy, so as to agravate me by escaping
my killfile. Finally I killfiled him, only to find I'd killfiled
myself, as he'd used my return addy as his return addy. I'm actually
surprised other trolls don't do the same. (Perhaps I shouldn't have
said that "out loud" as it were.)

The standard of photography seems to be quite high indeed judging by the
samples at the website. I really like alot of what I'm seeing among the
samples, if the magazines are filled with this type of photography, then I'd
say it would be worth my while paying the $10 per magazine. Who knows, maybe
you'll have an image in the first Shots mag I receive, judging by your
submissions to the SI, you have the skills.

Why do you even bother, the majority of your 'photography' stinks.

That's probably true about anyone. I just show more than most.

Thanks Joseph. There are loads of crappy photographers making a living
at it, I figure I can't do any worse than they! In fact, that's what
helped get me through graduate work. I had a professor (more than one)
who was just dumb as a stone, and I kept saying to myself, if he can do
it, I can do it too. In every issue of shots there are some images
that I have no idea how or why they were selected--just bad/boring
work, but then there are some that make one excited to go and take
    photos.

Have to agree with you there, the word for you in 2006 is EDIT.

  15. Yes. - It's as much a matter of individual taste as it is ability....If I
went through someone else's work and picked out the ones I wanted to post,
they would be completely different from the ones he did post, and probably
much worse, too, since my artistic taste is not very well developed. And, by
the same token, any good photographer could select some pretty good pictures
from my collection of thousands of mediocre ones.....

Google delays the time between when you post and the time it actually
appears to make sure it's not SPAM or some other offensive material. I
don't know how they actually do that.

    Have you kill-filed yourself?

Reminds me of a problem I am having....I keep getting a, "bounced email
message" that says that the email I sent to the following address was
refused by their server, and didn't make it. - The problem is, I never sent
an email to that address, so I have no idea what they are talking about.....
