I am looking for a slide show so that I can share my hundreds of forty year
old colour positive slides with family and anyone who will sit through a
session in front of a TV.
I will need to be able to add captions to some in the way of a footer to
explain what they are looking at.

I will also need to be able to produce on PAL / NTSC, DVD format to
accommodate family in Aus & overseas.

I have seen Muvee which has great presentation & viewing but no captions
    that I could find.

    Any suggestions please?

List what programs you have available on your computer. One of them must
    make a slide show

    or

Have a look at HTML Slide Show Wizard

At the cheap end Irfanview will do the slide show and then burn to VCD
or DVD. Captions will be a problem, but it works a treat and it is
    free.

Top of the line is probably ProShow Gold from Photodex. It does
everything including synchronising music and voiceovers as well as
captions and has multiple output formats and dozens of special
effects. Try it free and buy for US$ 69.99

I have used both and can recommend them.... for what its worth

captions can be added easily in the by dragging a box where you want the
text to go (left click, drag), then hit Control+T and type in the text,
select colour & background - job done :)

Easy! It always amazes me just how much Irfanview will do.

Photo2DVD Studio will do this quite nicely. Create a dvd slide show
with music, text and effects, etc. Try it free at
