Sony slave flash HVLFSL1B not working for me

  1. I have been getting good results with my Sony Cybershot DSCP200 digital
camera for a few monthes now. Recently, I added an external slave
flash (model HVLFSL1B). This flash does not really communicate with
the camera. It has a light sensor that points in the same direction as
its flash tube. When the camera's (weak) flash fires, the HVLFSL1B's
light sensor reacts by firing the HVLFSL1B's (strong) flash. That's
the theory of operation, as I understand it.

The HVLFSL1B seems to generate a lot of light, but my camera does not
seem to be taking good advantage of it. My pictures are
undersaturated and soft. I have been experimenting with shooting from
a tripod at objects 28 feet away. I have tried manually selecting the
lowest ISO and I have tried manually setting the focus. No luck yet.

I don't know what the problem is. Perhaps the camera's shutter closes
    before the HVLFSL1B fires?

Any ideas that I could try out? Thanks for your suggestions!

    Hi David,

Just a thought but are you using red-eye reduction flash as this may make
the more powerful unit to fire at the same time as the main one on the
    camera.

Also, to increase the effective range of a flash you increase the film speed
rating (ie, ISO 200 to 400), not decrease it.

    Cheers,
    Stephen.
