A solar flare speeding towards earth is offering Australia's southern
states a rare opportunity to witness the colours of the Aurora
    Australis.

Clouds of gas are expected to hit the upper atmosphere tonight and
possibly tomorrow night causing a spectacular show of red and green
    lights.

Vince Ford from the Mount Stromlo Observatory in the ACT says people
should be able to enjoy the natural light show by looking south after
    dark.

"They are very pretty, very spectacular and it's probably worth getting
out there and looking south after it gets dark over the next couple of
    nights," he said.

"It's like moving curtains of red and yellow, sort of curtains in the
    sky."
