Stand alone DVD question

    I have a number of tapes recorded hi-8. I transfer them to my computer thru a
    Digital8 camcorder. My question concerns 3 different ways of transferring the
    video to a stand alone Philips DVD recorder using firewire :

    1. D8 -> firew -> Computer
    Computer -> firew -> DVD

    2. D8 -> firew -> Computer
    Computer -> firew -> D8 tape
    D8 tape -> firew -> DVD

    3. Hi-8 tape in D8 -> firew -> DVD

    I would think the 3 methods would give pretty much identical results, but #3
    produces way too many artifacts. The only way to get decent recording from Hi-8
    without going thru the computer, is to use S-video rather than firewire.
    Anybody got an explanation?
