Standard camera mount screw

Discussion in 'Australia Photography' started by David Findlay, Oct 22, 2005.

  1. I want to build a custom mount for some camera gear. Is it easy to get the
standard screw system which cameras attach to tripods with? Thanks,

    David

check out the Manfrotto range of spigots. It is a standard thread and
you could use a bolt, pop down to Bunnings

Yeah. I remember the DIY bottlecap tripod that was going around.

If you mean just the bolts or screws they are 1/4" , I think whitworths.
Should be able to get a pack from a hardware store.

So the tightening mechanism is the spigot as mentioned by another poster?
    Thanks,

1/4 BSW (British Standard Whitworth) or 1/4 UNC (Unified Coarse Thread)
both have the same pitch of 20 TPI

and the other camera standard is 3/8 UNC 16 TPI

A spigot is not a tightening mechanism. So I do hope the OP will clarify
this situation into something that makes sense.

Not sure what you mean. All the tripod / camera mounting systems I have seen
are unique to the manufacturer. Do you have a particular make tripod in mind
    ?
How about a photo/sketch of what you mean ?

    Cheers

  10. Not sure what you mean. All the tripod / camera mounting systems I have
Haven't got a sketch, but what I'm trying to build is a bracket that will
hang from where the rear vision mirror in my car is attached, and will have
a small shelf below it, onto which I can screw a camera. Therefore I need a
screw that will fit into the camera's tripod mount hole, and tightening
mechanism, like what is on a tripod normally. Ideally the tightening
mechanism will be fast to screw the camera on and off. Thanks,

    David

If it's simply a shelf, sounds like you just need to drill a hole through it
and use a 1/4" screw/bolt from the hardware store, not quick but simple.
