stuck between lenses

    First of all I am not a photographer, but i have a decent camera and have an opportunity to get a zoom lens. My camera is a canon digital rebel xti. my choices are between the ef-s 55-250mm IS and the ef 75-300mm USM. is there a better lens between the two? What is better between the image stabilizer and the ultrasonic motor? i'm leaning towards the 55-250 just because it felt "smoother" when i would zoom in and out with the lens.
