Stupid question about my CAMCORDER battery...?

I just found an older camcorder that I got in 1998 and haven't used
much sense. I notice there is a two position SWITCH on the battery.
In one of the positions, there is a RED dot that is visible. Any ideas
what this unlabeled two position switch is used for?

    Thanks in advance.

It's just a marker, not connected to anything. It's supposed to help you
keep track of charged versus uncharged batteries, i.e. you finish charging,
you move the switch to the red position. You use up the battery on the
camera, when you take it off you move the switch back to the other position.
