For many years, my wife used Adobe's Photodeluxe Business Edition. Once
she shifted to Windows XP and Adobe stopped offering technical support
for the program (in 2002), the program more often than not freezes up.

The program was easy to use and familiar, but we're looking for a
relatively simple photo editing program to replace it. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

The free program GIMP, or it's Photoshop look-alike version GIMPshop.

Wow, I thought I was about the only person who ever used that.

I don't use it often, but I have it loaded on my XP machine and it runs
    without any problems.

Consider Photoshop Elements. It's sort of the replacement of
    Photodeluxe.
