Can any part of the camera be damaged by taking pictures of the sun without
    additional filters?

No, as long as it is a sunset you're photographing.

I've made a hobby of photographing sunsets with my Sony S70 without a tripod
as I was not just aiming at the sun but also cloud patterns and colours.

Simply taking pictures in sunlight will allow some direct sunlight to strike
the lens, but as long as you don't keep the camera steady for a minute or
more while pointing at the sun, you shouldn't have a problem.

At the processing stage, try messing with the brightness & contrast first
    before trying the Colour balance
