Taking film through airport x-ray machines

I'll be taking a few rolls of film to France in a couple of weeks and I
was worried about the risk of x-ray exposure.

I've read the guidelines on the BAA website and it says that 400 ISO
film should be fine through the hand luggage scanners but I'd prefer to
    make sure.

I had thought of buying one of those lead lined film bags but I read
that the machine operator might turn up the power if he can't see
through the bag. I wondered if the security staff would be prepared to
check the film by hand (only 4 rolls).

Anyone have any experience of this recently?
