  2. For the money, I am very pleased with my Tamron 75-300, but there was
no point me comparing it to one costing ten times more because I
couldn't afford ten times more. I tried the lens in the shop first, so
I could get a feel of its capabilities. Have you tried the 200-500 yet?

    What's a 200D? A Canon 20D or a Nikon D200? Either way why would you
consider putting such a crap lens on such nice bodies?

WHat particular areas did not work well on your camera Greg? This is a cheap
lens but the alternative is very expensive, what did you buy instead?

It's very low contrast and at above 250mm it's a little soft so I got
    rid of it. I have a 70-200 f/4 L and I'm thinking about getting a 1.4x
extender to get by until I save a little more and find the right deal on
    a Canon 100-400.
    Nothing yet.

I haven't tried the Tamron, but it is near the price of the Sigma 50-500mm
which is very versatile and has a reputation for being a good lens. Perhaps
it should be considered as well.

Get a D70 instead of the D200 and buy better lenses with the difference
    in price.

Ah, so you did have an answer to the OP, and thought you'd just be a
    dickhead instead.
