Tape brands vs MiniDV cam brands

I have to recommend a MiniDV camera to a friend, and whilst I always
stick to a brand that I trust - has a very low failure rate for me, I would
like to know if buying a different brand would make a huge difference.

I am going to spec a Sony (spit) MiniDV camera, and I know Sony make their
own tapes, but I prefer TDK.

Should I recommend Sony tapes for a Sony camera, or can I use a different
brand tape? In other words, is Sony designing their machines to better
    perform with Sony tape?

I don't think it matters if you use one brand of tape in another
brand of DV camcorder - just don't keep changing between
one brand and another seems to be the trick. That could just
    be pure google though. ;)

Check to see if their warranty conditions demand the use of Sony tapes. As
far as performance is concerned DV is DV - it either works or it doesn't.
Longevity and durability would be the only possible difference.
