The AUTO mode

  1. Do the AUTO modes of most DCs suck when dealing with poor lighting
    condition?

Auto modes always suck. Period. In low light conditions they suck even more,
since they will always try to make a reasonable shot, even when that is
    nearly impossible.

I pointed my new Canon compact camera at a black mouse pad shined by a

What should I do to fix that?

  6. Thanks for the image: from its EXIF data it was taken at ISO 800 at 1/8
It still looked grossy.... I know it's digital camera not
high-definition film... But it's still a bit grossy...
    Thank you for the tip!

  7. Didn't know you'd got a Canon SX30 until you said that and I checked the
    EXIF data.

The Canon SX30 doesn't have raw and that's a dealbreaker for me. Dunno WTF
Canon have been stripping features off their lower end cameras but its put
me in an "anyone but Canon" frame of mind.

I've checked to find equivalents with raw at a similar price point. If you
can return it for an exchange you might want to look at these:

    Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ45.
    Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100.
    Fuji Finepix HS10

My Canon G9 handles most light conditions well on auto and it does snow
almost perfectly which is unusual. One thing it hates is halogen light which
gives images a slight green tint. This is correctable in post but annoying
and Canon haven't issued a firmware fix as far as I'm aware.

  8. After dicking with a small sensor camera without raw (Canon A590) and moving
to a small sensor camera with raw (Canon G9) I can't recommend a small
sensor camera unless it has raw. Chroma noise and tint can be fixed in post
but for everything else you're fucked unless you get it right in camera.

I've found the only way to get SLR quality image noise is to skip long
exposures and do stacking. We're talking 5 minimum. 10 is better.

I lock at ISO 80 unless I absolutely must budge but for the right shot and
artistic vision ISO 400-800 is doable. Sometimes it looks pretty cool and
*some* shots can be cleaned up to look like they were shot at a lower ISO.

That said, it's easy to be anal about these things and talent and luck can
go some way to making up for a cameras shortcomings. So everyone can forget
everything I just said if they don't want to hear it.

To the OP, cuz I have my reader killfile all messages from @gmail so I
won't see your original message(s). I can only be able to read some
responses and have no interest in the right/wrong conversation so I write to
you instead. I don't read all messages but a quick browse through so I can
    just give some general info.

NOISE - I read you mention about noise which I can't agree or disagree
because your case isn't normal for me to agree or disagree.

    - The way I think about NOISE is to look at a normal photo, and to compare
the quality of good/bad lens, CMOS, and setting etc..

    - Your photo isn't a normal photo but a photo showing how the pixels
making the solid black, pretty black, and lighter black (gray). And
Darker and Lighter pixel is how it makes the darker/lighter color

    - And when you photograph in poor lighting condition then you will have
brighter and darker color, and you will see LOT OF DOTS with many
different colors to be able to come up with darker colors

IOW, if you photograph in totally darkness you will have a SOLID BLACK and
solid black won't show no noise (not visible to human eyes). If you
photograph a SOLID WHITE (100% pure white) then you will see no noise
because there is no other color to show.

DIFFICULTY - it's normal for the AUTO to have problem with poor lighting
situation, and if it's too dark for the camera (or setting) then it's
*impossible* for the AUTO to work (the shutter button may be disabled too).
    So in general

    - If the lighting condition is poor but the camera still be able to snap
the photo then I would say 99.99-100% chance it will have NOISE

    - If the lighting is much darker than the AUTO (or semi-auto) can handle,
then many cameras don't even allow you to take the photo

    - If the lighting condition is much darker than the auto can handle, then
MANUAL is the only mode you can snap the black photo.

Of course P&S camera could be another story (same with old film camera
too), and I believe that P&S camera will lets you snap in total darkness (I
haven't touched P&S for over a decade to remember).

  11. There are several things you can do to make it better, but a lot
Nikon D3S is way too expensive, and you also need to buy few lens for it.

I am not doing photography for living. I am just curious about how far
could a low-end camera go when picturing darkness.

    I agree. It's just a compact camera.

  17. You're not clear what your question is but the Canon SX30 doesn't have raw
because Canon didn't include that in the firmware. They're a marketing
driven company and have expressed the view that anyone who wants raw on a
camera that doesn't include it can use CHDK.

Directing people to CHDK is a cop-out and they know it. When the VCR market
was saturated IHVs pulled this "strip features raise the price" shit so a
new VCR with less features actually cost more than an old VCR with all the
features. This is no different. They just want to upsell their SLRs.
    Wankers.

  18. ...and then we have Chang, our OP, but he had no expectations other than
No one was selling the SX30 to me with such a promise. I am just curious
on how bad/well it performs in poor lighting conditions.
