To buy or not to buy, that is my question!

  1. I have a canon digital rebel and a tamron 28-200 f3.8-5.6, I am looking at buying a 2x teleconverter on eBay for under $100.

Are any brands better than others, are they bad news or should I just buy a canon 75-300 for around $300 and not waste my money... ?

  2. Teleconverters are only useful on really good, fast zoom lenses (or primes
    of course), such as a 70-200 f/2.8 or even a 70-200 f/4. Your 28-200 will
not give good results with a converter. And be advised that 2x converters
degrade the image a whole lot more than a 1.4 x converter in any case. A
1.4x converter costs one stop of light, a 2x converter 2 stops - this
affects autofocus; your 28-200 would not autofocus at all at the long end
because the camera's autofocus quits once aperture is below f/5.6.

Get the 75-300 if you need 300 mm.

    Agreed. I'm thinking of getting a 1.4 for my 400mm, but I doubt I'll
    ever buy a 2.0 - I'll just buy a larger lens.

If you're top zoom is 200mm, then try buying a used 300mm and then a
1.4 after that to get you to ~ 450mm.

    Hi kk,
I'm not sure what the price for these lenses are but I bought a Canon
70-300mm lens earlier this year for about $250 or so. It's a Canon EF
75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM, not very fast and no IS. You can get it at
amazon.com for $177 right now after rebates. I use it along with the
18-55mm lens that came with my Rebel. Here is a link to couple of
photos that I shot of the moon earlier this year with this lens
    (http://www.itakefotos.com/showthumbnails.php?category=21) These
images are only adjusted for brightness and also sharpened a bit. Hope
    this helps:)

    Best regards,
