This camcorder is very good, beats the heck out of vx2000 especially
the accurate white balance and very nice color reproduction.

It is a very capable camcorder however I have one bone to pick with
    it.

You need to do something about the packaging. Yes you provide more
stuff than sony, but you lose TERRIBLY in packaging because the
brown box it came with (like any other grocery paper fruit boxes) is
disgraceful compared to the high quality eye catching box that
sony's came in. The first impression is destroyed with the
    poor packaging.

That's where panasonic is piss poor at, marketing/packaging.
When we had to fork out over rm 10,000 for a prosumer camcorder
the least we expect is the camcorder to come in a cheap grocery
box that even sony consumer camcorders don't come in.

Panasonic image is severely dented where packaging is concerned,
you really need to fix your image or else others will feel you're
selling cheap ass grocery stuff at those prices.

This is reporting from Malaysia, where my friend ordered the
unit that was shipped from KL to Johor Bahru.

You can't be serious. Who cares? Are you buying a camcorder or a social
experience? I'd rather that as much of my money as possible went into the
part that I use everyday, not into the part that got thrown away (or stored
    in the attic.)

I'd lots rather walk down the street with a plain brown box than a
brightly-colored one that screams "mug this guy and steal me!"
Some packaging is meant to be "sacrificial" so that IT takes the dents and
slams and protects the contents against the kind of shock it would
experience in a more rigid enclosure.
Gorilla (or guerilla!) package handlers are apparently the same the world
    over. :)

Are you crazy? For products like this, people are buying based on the
overall quality of the product. I would much rather see companies
spend $ on developing a quality product rather than developing catchy
packaging for a product. Obviously, in your case, you made the buying
decision on the right factors and didn't see the box until it was
shipped to you. My guess is that most people don't even see the box
until after they decide to buy the camera.

Well true, because the camcorder is NEVER displayed in retail here, it is
only available on a pre-order basis, so basically we gotta really
know it well even before we actually handle it.

I'll say it won't cost them much just to put some decent packaging
on the grocery box to look like sony's designs. Sony's come in those
boxes too but at least they spend a little to make the box look good.
Those nice designs may help it at retail sales even. It's the psychology
factor. People will surely think, that they're paying quite a lot more
money compared to a vx2000, they expect it to at least come in a more
pleasant looking box/package, at least as good as vx2000 boxes.

I mean, come on, it's self satisfying to have not just an excellent
camcorder but a nice looking box you can put up on the cupboard and
admire at the same time... I do it all the time, admiring well
designed camcorder boxes like my DCR-TRV16E. *LOL*

Frankly I can't find much technical fault with this camcorder compared
to sony. It's ergonomically well thought out. I like the way you
turn the thing on/off for camera/vcr mode. With Sony, one
could easily slip into memory stick mode too easily since the buttons
    are not good to handle.

The built may not be as solid as sony, but it's very nice to handle and
i love the way the zoom ring is handled when you really need the fastest
zoom speed (this is very popular for asian live game/host shows).
I love the 3 way white balance presets.. cool stuff from those high
end gear i think... and lastly, you get really decent sharp leica lens...

The color reproduction and white balance is still the best in my opinion.
Maybe it just fits my tastes.

Call around to your local COLOR printer and ask them how much it would
cost to print a box in color on all sides. I think you would be
surprised at how expensive it is.
