UMAX scanner locked

I have an UMAX Astra 610P scanner, and I can't use it anymore; every time I
load Vista Scan to scan something, as the scanner is about to "warm up", the
light barely moves and I get a message saying "Please unlock your scanner!".
The fact is, it is not locked and has never been. I'm using Windows XP but
I have been able to use it under XP previously so I guess it might not be a
software problem. I am about to give up and buy a new scanner. Would that
be a good idea or is there something I can do? Thanks a lot for any input

You are aware that most scanners have a lock on the underside? It would have been locked
when new, check to make sure it is not locked if you haven't already. Good Luck.

Yes I am aware of that...but as I said: it isn't locked and was not even
locked when I purchased it. I have been using this scanner for 4-5 years
and never touched this "lock" button. It is, in fact, unlocked, I am sure
of that and I can clearly see the button's position. Any other ideas?
Should I give up and buy a new one? Thanks!

This is what the UMAX site says about this scanner and XP:
Sorry, No software was found. The selected product is incompatible with the selected operating system.
Please select a different operating system.

Only one more thing I can think of. I had bought 2 AGFA scanners - one for myself and one for my sister.
We both were running XP. Installed her's first and it worked right off the hop. When I installed
mine it wouldn't work. Finally, I tried changing the compatibility mode, tried them all and it would
only work in Win 95 compatibility mode. I dunno why but maybe try different compatibility modes before
you give up and go shopping for a new one. Good Luck.

Well, thing is it did work for 3-4 months under XP without any problems.
Therefore, I don't think I have to use compatibility mode. I believe this
could be a hardware problem. I only hope I wouldn't buy another scanner for
    nothing...

    (snipped)
It very well may be a hardware problem but either try the advice of compatibility mode or don't - your choice.
    As I said, good luck.

  7. You said that you 'see' that the lock is in the open position. How about
toggling it to the Lock position and then back to the Open position.

I already did it to see if it was really unlocked, and it was, or if it
wasn't, I re-unlocked it. Nothing works even if I lock and unlock it. I
really have no clue what this could be.

I have an old Paperport scanner that I finally found drivers that will
make it work with XP. Sometimes the scanner bar will return too far
and make a terrible noise in the process. At that point I get the
"Unlock Scanner " message. If I open the top and move the scanner,
with my hand, just slightly it is ok. It must be going too far and
sticking or something. I'll deal with it for now since I don't do much
    scanning.
