I have been using my digital camera (Fuji 4900Z) for a year mainly in the
automatic mode and now want to start using it in other modes and have been
trying to learn by reading the messages in this news group. I have learnt
but still have a poor general understanding. Could some one recommend a book
    which would help me

  2. There are quite a number of tutorials on the web for free. If you search
    www.dpreview.com you'll find some.

Bryan Peterson's _Understanding Exposure_ is excellent. It teaches you
the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO with lots of
    practical examples.

I am most grateful to all who replied. The articles on the web sites are
very good but I prefer to have a book which I can study. I will be buying
    the book on "Understanding Exposure"
    Again many thanks

Thanks but I am in UK and this site is the American Amazon site.
I tried to find it in the British site but no joy so I tried Google but
    again got the American site.
I 've always avoided buying from American sites but perhaps I am wrong!
    Do you think I should?

Time-Life books published a whole series on photography, a number of
volumes. One was on photography in general, one specifically on
cameras, other volumes on special aspects of photography. These were
quite popular, and many libraries have them.

Also, look or search "Focal Press", one of the big names in photo book
    publishers. Many good titles.

  12. By the way, this is a lovely book and worth owning, but really won't help
    you understand exposure.

One good book for that is

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0966081706/qid=1123479310/202-0307556-3489416

Exposure is really very simple, and this book goes over and over and over
it. Once you've read this one, Understanding Exposure will make a lot more
    sense.
