I have a JVC DV500 that I have been using for several years, and I am
looking for a camera that will give me a better image. Is it worthwhile to
upgrade to the DV5000, or will the image quality be the same?

If the DV5000 is not the way to go, what recommendations do you have. I
need a camera that has at least a 1/1000th second shutter speed as I shoot a
    lot of sports.

You have a few choices in the price range. The JVC GY DV5000,
Panasonic AG DV-200 and the new Canon XL2. Then from there you can
go, budget permitting, to a SONY 390.

Always keep in mind the better the lens......the sharper the image.

They are all great cameras---however, the XL2 is not released yet so
there are no opinions as of now.
