Does anyone know if Avid's software use a proprietary format
for internal storage, or does it natively use OMF? I know
their tools can save out OMF files but I'm wondering if they
stores video on disk in a proprietary format, and only generate
OMF on export. If there is something proprietary, is documentation
    available for the file structure?

Also, does anyone have any good pointers to websites/books
on the real nuts-and-bolts of OMF and other popular formats?

    Thanks,
    -Jim

Post this to the Avid user's forum at avid.com...you'll probably get a far
    more informed answer.
