whats the best way to get VHS movies into my Mac (Powerbook) so I can
use footage in some FCP projects?

Get a DV Bridge (analog -> DV convertor) and plug it into your firewire
connection. Canopus makes good ones but there are many.

    Then use iMovie

Many miniDV camcorders allow you to run an analog video signal in
through the A/V jack, then the camcorder converts it to digital and
then feeds it directly out through the firewire / 1394 jack so you can
plug it into your computer. My Sony vintage 2003 Sony DCR-PC9 do
this. You may have to check the manual (available online) to see how
to set the menu options for this operation. If you have or can borrow
a miniDV camcorder that does this, it saves buying/installing an extra
    card.
