For those who appreciate vintage photos here's a site that features very interesting 19th Century and early 20th Century photos, some sepia, taken IIRC by Christian groups.

    <http://www.israeldailypicture.com/>

shows Jewish people and institutions of the periods against background of important historical and political events -- British, Turks, etc.

Din't know Jews were expelled from Jerusalem in 1929 and 1936.

There were also many massacres in that era.

It's not something that the British are proud of, today. Understanding
of the thousands of such incidents helps people of good will understand
some Israeli actions. There are people of ill will, on both sides who
exploit these fears and tensions, for political purposes. What you see
was far from an isolated incident. There are even people today who claim
the Holocaust never happened, and that the atrocities were exaggerated.
I would gladly introduce any of them to some of my neighbors.
Back to photography, images such as those keep the memory of those
    atrocities alive.

Well, speaking of the these specific events, the British did not harm the Jews at the times mentioned. In fact they did the Jews a favor in 1936 by cooperating with Haganah.

    +1.

I'd forgotten, until reminded by the film about McCullin on the TV
recently, of just what the Christian Phalangists got up to in Lebanon in
the 1970's. Puts more recent Islamic fundamantalism into slightly
    different context.

The just restricted Jewish immigration to what was then Palestine and to
    Britain.

As I said earlier, there were people with agendas, on all sides who were
trying to take advantage of this unrest.
