VirtualDub cannot access Vfapi pseudo file, explorer says its in use, any suggestions?

    I had no problem with this before I reinstalled XP.
    I am using dvd2avi to open vobs, then vfapi to serve the saved
    project, and when I attempt to open the file with virtualdub, it says
    the file cant be opened because it is being used by another process.
    after I close vfapiconvert, vdub can access the file, but is unable to
    use it for obvious reasons.
    I reinstalled the vfapi codec, checked dvd2avi for the vfapi option,
    and all looks fine. Tmpg says the file is unsupported.

    Im goin nuts here, plz help
