VirtualDub - MPEG Import Filter : pack synchronization error - Corrupt mpeg files with Terratec Cine

I have installed a TV tuner in my computer - a Terratec Cinergy 400 card. It
gives great value for money, but I do have one big problem:
When I use the accompanying software - InterVideo WinDVR v. 2.0 to record a
programme, it produces a mpeg file of gargantuan proportions - and I can't
load this file into VirtualDub to convert it to avi - thus compressing it
into DivX. The file plays fine in Windows MediaPlayer for instance. But any
try at converting it fails. I have also tried loading it into TMPGEnc to
maybe use one of the MPEG tools there, but I have no idea what to do. :)
When I try to load the file into VirtualDub, I immediately get an error
saying: MPEG Import Filter: pack synchronization error.

I have scoured the net looking for a util to correct MPEG files. I have come
across FlaskMPEG, but so far the program only seems to produce about 2 min
of video after which it does nothing.

I hope somebody out there can recommend a good tool. Obviously there must be
something the matter with the mpeg-files, that are being produced.

p.s.: I hope I'm posting this in the right group. If not please advise which
    to use instead!

    VirtualDub can't open MPEG-2 files.
    VirtualDubMod can:

You are trying to feed an MPEG-2 file into VirtualDub. VirtualDub
    doesn't understand MPEG-2.
FlaskMPEG or MPEG Mediator are the right programs if you are cheap.
