VirtualDub segments larger than original file

Hi. New to the group & video editing. I have some .avi files that I
captured from my DV camera. Being a newb, I didn't think to make sure
to clip the videos to be smaller than 4.7GB so that I could archive the
raw video to single-layer DVDs for future use. Anyway, I have a couple
7-8GB resulting avi files. Instead of sinking $ into dual-layer disks,
I thought I would try to find a way to segment the original files. A
few keystrokes later, I found VirtualDub. Seems to work like a champ,
with one exception. I segmented a 7.7GB in half, and the resulting
files are 30GB/ea...???? I must have some setting too high. I have
tried cutting the frame rate from 29.xx to 24. No help. Tinkered with
a few other things & still no luck. Any ideas?

Odds are you're using a codec that's different from the original. If all
you want to do is cut/split, do your trimming and select "video - direct
stream copy". Then go "file - save as avi" giving the modified file a
different name. This new file should now be half the size of the original.

Your the man. That is exactly what it was. I have a concept of
codecs, but, I think I have some reading to do.
