Vivitar's website may be of help in aquiring a guidebook but understanding
the dots is easy and you may not need to. Basicly, the coloured dots are
the auto flash exposure settings any book about beginning flash photography
should cover the subject - this flash, when used in auto (coloured dots)
mode will give different power outputs according to the subject distance -
it will give just the required amount of flash power to give you a well
exposed shot. The auto settings are great if you want to control the depth
of field in your flash shots.

First of all, set the correct film speed on your flash. Beside the coloured
dots there should be a number that corresponds to the aperture settings on
your lens. If, say 5.6 is beside the green dot, then set the flash sensor
to the green position and your camera lens to this aperture and that's it -
shoot away to your heart's content and as long as the OK light is coming on
your shots should be OK. If the OK light doesn't shine, then use a smaller
number (wider aperture) that is next to another colour. Likewise, if 11 is
beside, say, the red dot, do the same according to this colour. You'll find
that the further away you are from your subject or if you're bouncing the
light off a ceiling or wall, a wider aperture will be needed so go for the
colours corresponding to the lower numbers.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello.

Does anyone out there know where I can get a manual for a Vivitar 3500 flash
or indeed know how it works ? It look pretty simple but there are a couple
of things I don't understand on it (coloured dots etc.).

I hope the attachment made it through as I can't see it anywhere. It's the English version of the Vivitar 3500 flash manual and it's a pretty basic manual.
