My Sony Viao Notebook just died.

I thought I'd ask what people now suggest is the best laptop to get for
the best price. Laptops have dropped in price so much now, with a bunch
of new brands (Gateway, Dell, Sony, HP, etc..). I was using my Sony for
digital video editing, which it did fabulously. Worked with firewire
    really well.

Three months ago I bought a Packard Bell (NEC in USA) EasyNote R8
(Centrino) - Model 1800DR, with 1 Gb RAM, 1.8 Ghz processor, 80 Gb storage,
dual layer DVD burner, 15.4" display & a few other "specials" as standard
equipment & so far so good. But must admit that lots of people say that
Toshiba is considered to the top brand in laptops. Doing some research I
noticed that Packard Bell is the name NEC uses in Europe, Australia & Asia.

You might want to approach this from the direction of
what processes you intended to implement and the
software that you will want to use. For example; if you
will be using www.seriousmagic.com 's "DV Rack",
then you would want to be sure your laptop met the
requirements for that software. The same goes for any
    extra hardware like attached storage.
