Am in the UK. Need to get half a dozen bolts camera mounting
    bolts.

Where in UK can I buy a few 1/4"-20 UNC bolts. Or 1/4" Whitworth
    if available.

What range of lengths do they usually come in?

Here in the US you can get them at any hardware store in about any
length you want all the way up to threaded rod that is about 6 feet
    long.

Measure that you need to go through, add 1/4 inch and get a few
    washers.

If too long there is a risk of damage to the camera if the internal thread
    ends in plastic

Why would you want Whitworth? Many fastener stockists and general
engineering suppliers will carry 1/4-20 UNC in a range of lengths,
materials and heads. If there's nowhere local to you try searching
eBay for 1/4 unc screw stainless

I know the differences, but I thought UNC was used - I guess Whitworth
was one of the few standards available around the time that Daguerre's
and Talbot's processes were gaining in popularity.

Where the heck do you people live and why are you-all debating this.
Take your camera to the hardware store, hand it to a knowledgeable
clerk and say "I need a bolt to fit in here, about yea long". Done.
Solved. Completed. $0.05 later, you're done.
