Please could someone tell me if I need a mercury battery for the OM2N, or am I
    thinking about the OM1?
Many thanks for your advice. regards, David

Check out the battery section at this page for the olympus stuff :

A couple of notes to remember.
On the OM series that take the dual silver oxide batteries (OM2N is one),
you CAN'T substitute the dual height lithium cell, discharge curve is
    different.
On the OM1 series you can put in a module from C.R.I.S. to adapt the camera
for alkaline cells, or you could have the camera modified.
Photosphere and Camtech will do this.

The OM-1 uses a Mercury cell.

The OM-2 uses a pair of silver oxide cells, S76 I think.
