Which high capacity CF card for Canon S70?

Discussion in 'Canon' started by Reestit Mutton, Feb 7, 2005.

  1. Hi,

I've been asked to buy a large capacity (1GB or 2GB) Compact Flash card
for a family member who has a Canon S70. While I know that speed is
likely to be important for such a large capacity card with a 7MP camera
I'm unsure whether it's worth paying extra for either a Lexar 80x,
Sandisk Ultra II or Sandisk Extreme III card over, say, a Kingston Elite
    Pro.

The 2GB Kingston is approx £90 whereas the alternatives are more like
    £130-£140 minimum.

What I'm intesrested in is whether the speed of the Canon S70 is likely
to limit (or even completely negate) the potential speed benefit of the
Lexar and Sandisk cards mentioned above.

FWIW, I don't think the recipient's computer is likely to benefit from
increased download speed as it's unlikely to have USB2.0 or firewire
    built-in.

I've looked at Rob Galbraith's CF card database but it only covers CF
card performance in Digital SLRs and I'm unsure as to whether I can
extrapolate the likely speed of the Canon S70 from those of the Canon
    DSLRs listed.

    Can anyone help?

    cheers,
    RM

  3. Thanks for the response Johnnie.

Yup - I'm aware of mymemory, along with a plethora of other cheap memory
outlets. It's not the price that I'm unsure of, it's the cost/benefit of
the fastest of them in a Canon S70.

While I know that I need a fast card, I just don't know how fast will be
necessary and sufficient for a Canon S70 in raw mode. If the camera
itself has a theoretical maximum write speed then I don't want to be
unnecessarily wasting extra money on a super fast card when a fast one
will be sufficient to get the maximum performance out of the camera.

Is anyone out there able to comment on this issue?

    cheers,
    RM

  4. Okay...in the absence of any useful responses (no disrespect to
Johnnie's attempt...while it was useful, it just didn't answer the
question) can anyone suggest a NG where this question is more likely to
    be answered?

    cheers,
    RM

For the extra money, I would go with the fastest card possible. Even if
the S70 doesn't use the full potential of the higher speed card, you
may use the card in another camera down the road that will. The S70 is
a fine camera and since you want to record in RAW, it is better to err
on the side of the faster card.

If you go to http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons70/page4.asp they
show the storage times of RAW and JPEG images for the S70 using a 1GB
SanDisk Ultra II CompactFlash card. Hope it helps.

I have an S70 and must say that the speed of the CF card is not
    important at all.
    I have a Lexar 1GB (40x) and a Sandisk EXTREME 512mb and I can't notice
    any difference.
However to read the cards with your pc, the extreme is muuuuuuuuuuuuuuch
    faster !!!!
So I would say : take the fastest card possible (the price difference is
no so big anymore) Sandisk EXTREME are just great cards !!!
To see pictures taken with the S70, take a look at my website :

Please don't hesitate to ask for any more information, or better, put
your question on the forum of my site, I'll answer you asap
