Who does chip Nikon chip conversions beside Rolland Elliot??

Discussion in 'Nikon' started by John Gaasland, May 3, 2004.

  1. Do you know if anyone else does the chip conversion for manual focus
Nikon lenses so they will work with matrix metering besides Rolland
Elliot? He hasn't answered my e-mails and I've read some not-so-good
stuff about him on the web. Please e-mail me at
    Thanks, John.

All you have to do is read his website to realize he's an ass.
Unfortunately, no, I don't know of anyone else who does this--what lens are
    you thinking of getting chipped?

    John,

I know that Bjørn does this on his own stuff many times. I have never been a
big fan of Rolland after he converted my 8mm f/2.8 lens for me in the Fall of
2001. Within about 2 shots of receiving it back, modified by him, the spring
to the aperture ring (that forces the aperture to reopen to max after a shot)
apparently came loose within the lens and it had to be repaired. I returned it
to Rolland and he repaired it, but he griped about it, claiming that it had
"nothing to do with the chip installation." Well, it may have had nothing to
do with the chip installation, but his monkeying around inside there probably
    did. It works fine today.

I also understand that Nikon will do this as well. Rolland's work is nothing
to get too excited about. He's not meticulous. What you need is someone
seriously anal (like maybe a neurosurgeon with some free time and a little lens
skill--Don, take note) who can do it and keep things looking good on and in the
lens. Bjørn's site has a great deal more insight into the conversion than
Rolland's such as the discussion about which lenses can be done and which he
has done personally. I really doubt that Bjørn would be able to take the time
to do this for someone,--he's mostly a shooter and does this stuff for himself
to push the photographic envelope! If you have some minor skills with a Dremel
tool and a small set of screwdrivers you could probably do this yourself. The
chips are available from Nikon USA.

    Good luck,

He had my lens for seven months, during which he told me he sent it to
me (it never came, no tracking number, no insurance). Then he said it
must have gotten lost in the mail, he would find another lens to put a
chip in for me. I called him, he said he found one and it would be done
soon. Another long wait. Called again, he said he had sent it to me,
gave me a bogus tracking number. Called him back, he said he would
e-mail me with the correct tracking number, no e-mail. He never e-mails
or calls a person back. He leads you on and on until you finally just
give up. A very sleazy and slippery charactor. I'm sure you will find
many more unhappy customers on Photo.net. I'm going to tell my
insurance company that the lens was stolen. The $100 labor he charged
me is gone too. Lost a really good macro lens and $100 to this
charlaten. Beware, stay way!! John Gaasland.
