Win98: ART File instead of JPEG?

I loaded Photoshop to a PC with Win 98, and
found out whenever I save any JPEG file,
it ends up being save as a .ART file!

What is a .ART file? Is there something I can
configure in Windows menu so the JPEG file
is saved as a JPEG file.

  2. ..ART is a format used by AOL, AFAIK. It sounds like an AOL installation
has corrupted a file association somewhere.

When you click on File > Save if you click on the down arrow in the Format
box, you should see a bunch of formats to save in. I usually save as a PSD or a
TIFF file. Are you not getting these choices?

I loaded Photoshop to a PC with Win 98, and
Where did the original file come from?

It sounds like you have America Online on your computer. A .ART file is an
America Online compressed image. When you use the America Online browser, it
"speeds up" Web display by taking all the .GIF and .JPG images on the pages,
compressing them using the proprietary .ART format, and sending those .ART
    images.

It makes Web pages look like crap; .ART is highly lossy. It also means that if
you use the AOL browser to save a JPEG, you may look at the file and think it's
a JPEG, but it's not. It's an AOL .ART file.

Photoshop does not save .ART format files. It saves .JPG files. It sounds like
either something's wrong with your AOL installation, or somehow your Photoshop
..JPG files are being viewed using an AOL browser or converted by AOL to .ART
    files.

Yeah...optimized to turn silk purses into sow's ears. :)
(I'm allowed to say that; I use AOL...)

There is somewhere in the AOL preferences ( I have forgotten where ... you can
query AOL) a spot where you can turn off the .art compression ... and get the
pics is their original jpg format.
