Let's say someone just handed you a check for $5000. What do you spend it on?

    Paying old bills?
Getting that new lens you've been lusting after?
    Perhaps a needed computer upgrade?

How would YOU spend the $5K?

If I were you, holding a $5K check, I might be eyeing a 1D MkII...

Because I know how much you like(d) your 1v, and how much inferior the
    D60 is to a 1 series.

I would hand it back and ask for cash. ;-)
    there's an idea!
only if it is *really* needed.
I'd probably bank it for a rainy day.

    I know. *Really boring!*

  6. Probably not. He did indicate that he plans to spend it. ;-)

    Hmm let's see 5k at 2%... in 72/2 = 36 years it'll be worth 10k

    lol

I hadn't even thought of that!
Why'd you have to go and put that little fantasy dancing in my head?
    You're the devil!

If I had $10K to spend, the MKII would be high on my list. However, my Win98
Pentium II computer is in serious need of an upgrade.

The good news is that I have a new monitor, new printer, new scanner, all of
which are top notch. Now I just need a box with about 2GB of memory, some USB
    2.0 ports, and a DVD-RW.
Any recommendations from you computer geeks out there?

Yes. Actually she got a $5K check as well. They were gifts from my mom as a
graduation present for my wife who just got her Masters degree today. Sure
    surprised the Hell outta me.

  11. ASUS mother boards work well, and you can probably get a board with all that you need plus some serious memory capacity. Pick one
out from the asus site then goto www.pricewatch.com to find a good deal. Same with memory and Hd's.

    Cheers

Hey, it's your mother. Buy the MkII for yourself (with your money) and make
the wife spring for the computer. ;-)

You can build one for less than $700 that will kick butt over your Pentium 2
(with your big memory and a big hard drive, and decent video card).

Spend about $290 on the board with P4 processor...spend another $120 on a
video card (less if you don't care about 3D gaming)...$129 at costco will
get you a 160GB Western Digital hard drive...another $150 for the memory.
Another $100 or so will get you a DVD writer.

With that lowish cost, you'll have a screaming machine, and will then only
have to shell out another $300 or so to pay for that SECOND toy...the Mark
    II.

--Just think... 8.5 frames per second of those cheerleaders you love so
    much...

  20. First off, a few more lenses for my "obsolete" T90. Canon 17 and/or
    14mm, maybe a 20, a fast 85 or 100, and a moderate 300.

No digicam yet. I'm still holding out for a 10+ MP SLR with full size
sensor for ~$1500. Since that's a few years off, I'd save most of the
loot and 'console' myself with a new guts for the computer. Maybe a
    dual socket 939 setup?!

    Hummm.....

OTOH, 2~3K would buy some NICE medium format equipment and a MF film
    scanner....
